2010 Olympic medal design competition opens: "VANCOUVER - The rarest of Vancouver's Olympic and Paralympic emblems, the gold, silver and bronze competition medals that will be presented to the world's best athletes, are about to be designed. Will they be engraved with the city's distinctive skyline or display the Maple Leaf, or have an aboriginal theme? Will they incorporate distinctly Canadian products, such as wood from the West Coast, diamonds from the North, nickel from Ontario or granite from the Canadian Shield? These are questions the Vancouver Organizing Committee opened the door to today when it issued a request for proposals for the design of the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic medals."
