The Canadian Press: Call goes out for designs for Olympic medals for the 2010 Games

The Canadian Press: Call goes out for designs for Olympic medals for the 2010 Games: "VANCOUVER - First it was the 2010 Olympic symbol, then the mascots, now it's time to design the medals for the Winter Games in Vancouver and Whistler. Olympic organizers have opened a worldwide competition to design the gold, silver and bronze medals that will be handed out to Olympic and Paralympic athletes at the Games. The call for proposals from artists and designers says the medals must reflect the determination and heart of the athletes and the designs must be submitted by the end of January. The designs will have to go through an approval process that includes the Vancouver Olympic Organizing Committee and the International Olympic and Paralympic Committees, with final approval expected in late February. The Royal Canadian Mint will manufacture the 867 medals needed for the games from metal supplied by Teck Cominco. The official 2010 Olympic symbol is a Inuit Inukshuk, while the recently unveiled mascots include a Sasquatch and a combination spirit bear and killer whale."
